“We want to better integrate environmental stewardship and energy conservation into the business of improving the quality of life in Irondequoit. The Task Force will help make sure our environmental performance is the best it can be.”
- Supervisor Mary Ellen Heyman
Environmental Sustainability Task Force
SAVE ENERGY, USE FEWER RESOURCES, REDUCE POLLUTION On October 16, 2007, the Irondequoit Town Board voted unanimously to adopt the recommedndations of the Environmental Sustainability Task Force, thereby making Irondequoit one of the first communities in New York State with a comprehensive energy and environmental policy. The Task Force's recommendations are contained in its Final Report, which can be viewed by clicking here. Supervisor Heyman organized the all-volunteer Task Force in April 2007 to identify local problems, set goals, and develop recommendations to the Town Board on how to save energy, use fewer resources, and reduce pollution.
The Task Force focused on areas Town government can directly control or influence. Supervisor Heyman said before the Town Board vote, "The recommendations contained in the Environmental Sustainability Task Force report are what I call 'practical environmentalism':
· "There is nothing that will break the Town’s budget.
· "They will save the Town a lot of money in the long-run.
· "All of the recommendations are tried and true. There is nothing experimental or impractical. The recommended initiatives are being used successfully by municipalities throughout the country.
· "Each initiative has potential grant funding attached to it.
· "And, reducing waste and saving resources is simply the right thing for the Town to do." As recommeded in the Final Report, Supervisor Heymam appointed an Environmental Sustainability Advisor Council to help guide the Town's implementation of the Final Report's policies and imitiatives. .
