Bertha Gawens was an Irondequoit Police Department School Crossing Guard assigned to the school crossing at St. Paul Blvd and Thorncliffe Dr. She crossed many children each day, getting to know them well.
In 1982, while crossing three children she heroically placed herself in front of an oncoming car that had run a red light. Ms. Gawens was struck by the vehicle as she did her best to push the children out of harms way. She suffered severe injuries that placed her in a coma for five (5) years until she passed away.
This memorial sign is in recognition of her care of children and the sacrifice that she made for their safety. She was truly Dedicated to Service.
