- Where in the former mall will the community center be located?
The space allocated for the town community center is located on the Ridge Road side of the building, near the main entrance and opposite the area of the former food court. The graphic(s) on the page show the approximate location.
- How big will the community center be?
The owner of the property has indicated that approximately 50,000 square feet could be available for the Town to develop/use as community center.
- What amenities will the community center have?
That is one of the important questions we need this community engagement effort to help Town Board answer. Generally, the term community center implies some recreation components as well as a central gathering place for residents.
- How will the Town operate the new community center?
The Town is in the process of exploring potential community partnerships and long-term operation and management models. To ensure a thorough examination, the Town will be engaging the services of a municipal financial analysis expert to help better understand the potential management and financing options. The analysis will include recommendation(s) about the best approach for Irondequoit given our current and future needs.
- How will the Town decide what amenities are provided at the new community center?
The Town Board convened an Advisory Committee to guide the community engagement process, which will help prioritize recreation and community space needs. The information and ideas generated through the process will help inform what is included in the preliminary and final design of the community center.
Ultimately, the Town will advance a community center development plan that addresses community needs in a way that is affordable and can be managed effectively long-term.
- Would the Pinegrove facility remain open?
The future plan for Pinegrove would be determined once a final plan for the new community center is developed and the management and financing options are analyzed.
- What is the timeline for the new community center?
The development of the new community center will correlate to, and be coordinated with, the owner’s first phase of redevelopment of Skyview on the Ridge. The Town Board hopes to adopt a final plan in the first quarter of 2018, with construction commencing as quickly as possible thereafter.
- Is the town considering any other locations for the community center?
No. The opportunity for redevelopment of space within the former mall (now known as Skyview on the Ridge) is real and timely. Adaptive re-use of the mall presents an opportunity for the Town to be involved directly in the property’s revitalization and redevelopment. Additionally, there are limited spaces in the Town that could adequately meet the requirements for a community center.
- I missed the first meeting. Any chance I can see it?
Yes! The video of the meeting is available here on the website. Additionally, a PDF version of the presentation is provided for your review.
- Will there be another meeting?
Yes. In addition to the focus group meetings that will conducted to address specific user groups’ needs, the Town will conduct another public meeting before a final report is presented to the Town Board.

- What is a Community Center?
According to Google, a community center is a place where people from a particular community can meet for social, educational, or recreational activities. When we look around Monroe County and beyond, no two town community centers are exactly alike. In fact, they vary significantly in terms of physical spaces and activities they can accommodate.
The Town of Irondequoit wants to develop a new community center that will serve and benefit all ages. The exact configuration of our community center will depend on the types of social, educational and recreational activities we need and want, within the context of what’s physically and financially feasible. This community engagement process will help us determine which specific community center amenities will best meet our town’s specific needs.
